my first week's reflections...

i entered our first lesson thinking that ICT was all about learning ways of injecting technology into lessons to spruce them up & get students a little more interested in the subject that is being delivered. however, i was in for a shock when dr tan shared that powerpoint slides & videos weren't quite considered a form of ICT. as far as i can remember from schooling days, even to the 4 weeks of teaching attachment in a particular secondary school, visual aids such as transparencies, visualizers and powerpoint slides were the norm, with occasional additions of video & animation clips. from the first lesson, i learnt that ICT (information AND communication technology) is a 2-way thing. while as teachers our job is to deliver the content of the subject we are teaching, how then do we check on the students' understanding of what has been brought across? here lies the importance of 2-way communication - students too, need to be given avenues to reflect & respond. hence the use of tools such as youtube & blogs.

it's interesting to note that ICT can involve collaboration in different ways - from a few individuals coming together to exchange ideas through online forums or discussion groups to even producing a video that eventually gets posted onto youtube. wow. there's so much to learn from this module. i've a question though, is there ONE particular form of ICT that encompasses all 5 aspects in the framework of meaningful learning?

that's it for the week. more to come...

  1. You bring up an interesting question. I am sure that you and your group mates will be able to answer that question over time.

I will pose a related question: Must an ICT tool meet all five principles in the framework so that learning is meaningful? Why/Why not?

  2. I believe there is one particular ICT which encompasses all the 5 aspects in the framework of meaningful learning. However, this can only be made possible by careful planning by the teachers (depends on how the teachers conduct the lesson). Furthermore, teachers' views on the affordance of the ICT tools play a huge part too. Given the same ICT tool, one may be able to encompass all 5 aspects in the framework of meaninful learning while the other may only encompass 2 or 3. Correct me if am wrong.

  3. Here is my 2 cents worth regarding this issue. After finishing the second lesson of ICT, Dr Tan did mention that there is no need for a single ICT lesson to incorporate all the 5 aspects of meaningful learning. He never mentioned cannot. So I presumed that there should be a tool somewhere where encompassing all 5 aspects of meaningful lesson is possible. Siyun mentioned careful planning from teachers. But does the content play a part too?
